There is a feeling of goodwill in the air along with a push to do more as this sacred season begins. How do you feel? Excited to share time with family and friends? Exhausted with the addition of more activities and responsibilities? Anxious about the additional expected spending? Do you find yourself thinking about all your blessings or what is missing?
The joy children express when with those they love is infectious; the sheer pleasure of sharing evident in their sparkling eyes. Do you remember that joy? The sheer delight in sharing time with those you love; feeling content in the comfortable familiarity of family. What is your favorite holiday memory? Was it giving or receiving the perfect present; enjoying a feast prepared with love? Or, attending the glorious holiday services?
For me, it is the memory of sitting in the kitchen sipping hot chocolate with my family after midnight mass services. The gift was in the experience not the things; although, the delight of finding a Christmas stocking stuffed with treats still makes me smile.
In this season of happiness, the world is alight with love, while children wait in anticipation of Santa and for the gifts he brings. What happens if parents cannot deliver the toy so anxiously awaited or purchase the fixings for a fabulous family dinner? What if there is no one to share the celebration? This is part of the holidays that is rarely spoken of, yet, it may be what you or someone near to you is feeling.
For many people this is a challenging time of year. There is a pressure to “present” not only gifts but an attitude of happiness when that is the last thing that they are feeling. Financial instability, emotional loss and a limited support system contribute to feelings of disappointment or sadness. Perhaps you too have experienced a loss, death, divorce or unexpected change.
You are not alone. Reach out, ask for, and accept help. Offer assistance to others who would benefit from your time, experience and expertise. Build community connection by drawing together in support of one another. Lifting individual burdens of fear and pain you’ll be helping to heighten the planetary consciousness through loving kindness.
This is the season of joy and universal love; the perfect time to teach our children the gift of compassion. Volunteer with your family and friends to help a neighborhood organization that touches your spirit. Start a new tradition. Listen to your heart and soul; your actions will lead you to holiday happiness and blessings!
Rather than rush to the mall in a frenzy of shopping excitement, take time and thought to start a new tradition. Over dinner with friends we talked about what it would be like to return to the practice of creating the gifts we give. What talent could we share? Even with a few naysayers at the start we confirmed everyone at the table had special ability, from woodworking to pottery, cooking to computers and bookkeeping to organizational skills. Take a moment to consider yours. Hold a clear quartz crystal to help you focus. Close your eyes breathe and receive. You have a unique gift.
